As the summer sun kicks into high gear, it’s essential to make sure your pet stays safe, cool, and comfortable. Rising temperatures can lead to heat-related health risks, especially for pets who spend time outdoors. Whether you’re heading to the beach, taking a walk, or just hanging out in the backyard, being proactive about heat safety can make all the difference.
Below are simple yet effective ways to protect your furry friend during the hottest months of the year.
Hydration is Key
The most important factor in keeping your pet safe in the heat is ensuring they have access to plenty of fresh, cool water. Pets can dehydrate quickly, especially during outdoor play, long walks, or even just lounging in a warm home.
To help keep your pet hydrated:
- Carry a portable water bowl and bottle whenever you head out.
- Change their water frequently throughout the day to keep it fresh and appealing.
- Add ice cubes to their water bowl for a refreshing bonus.
- Provide extra water stations indoors and outdoors if possible.
If your pet seems tired, pants more than usual, or has dry gums, dehydration could be a factor.
Walks: Timing is Everything
During the summer, the pavement can get hot, and your pet’s paws are sensitive. To avoid injury, walk your dog during early morning or late evening hours when temperatures are lower.
To keep their paws safe:
- Test the pavement by placing the back of your hand on it for 7 seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them.
- Stick to grassy areas or shaded walking paths when possible.
- Keep walks shorter and more frequent to avoid overheating.
Don’t forget that pets with short snouts (like Bulldogs or Pugs) or long, thick coats are especially sensitive to heat and may require even shorter outings.
Protect Against Heat Exhaustion
Pets can suffer from heat exhaustion and heatstroke, both of which can be life-threatening if not caught early. Unlike humans, pets don’t sweat. Most of their cooling comes from panting, which isn’t always effective in extreme temperatures. Be sure to watch for signs like excessive panting or drooling, weakness or lethargy, vomiting or diarrhea, and glazed eyes or difficulty walking.
If you notice any of these symptoms:
- Move your pet to a shaded or air-conditioned space immediately.
- Offer small amounts of water.
- Place a cool, damp towel on their paws and belly.
- Contact your veterinarian for further instructions.
Quick action can save your pet’s life.
Never Leave Your Pet in a Hot Car
The inside of a parked car can heat up in minutes, even on relatively mild days. Leaving your pet in the car can lead to heatstroke, which can be fatal. Always take your pet with you or leave them at home during errands. If you’re running errands or stopping somewhere that doesn’t allow pets, leave them safely at home. It’s simply not worth the risk.
Create a Cool Home Environment
Your pet’s safety doesn’t stop outside. Make sure their indoor environment stays cool too.
To keep your pet cool inside:
- Use fans or air conditioning to regulate the temperature.
- Set up cool resting spots away from direct sunlight.
- Offer frozen treats or cooling mats to help them beat the heat.
- Brush pets regularly to remove excess fur, but avoid shaving breeds with double coats, as their fur also protects against sunburn.
Keep an Eye on High-Risk Pets
Some pets are more prone to heat-related issues than others, including:
- Senior pets
- Puppies and kittens
- Brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds like Pugs and Persian cats
- Overweight pets
- Pets with existing heart or respiratory issues
These pets require extra care and closer monitoring during hot weather.
