Summer is the perfect season for outdoor adventures, backyard barbecues, and long beach days, but it also brings seasonal risks for your furry family members. Whether you’re spending time in the sun or enjoying the fireworks, it’s important to keep your pets safe, cool, and comfortable. Here are five essential summer safety tips every pet owner should know.
1. Water Safety
Pools, lakes, and the ocean can be dangerous for both dogs and cats. Cats usually like to stay dry, even during the summertime. Although they may not be natural swimmers, they can still fall into pools or explore dangerous water sources. It’s best to keep cats away from water altogether to avoid accidents, and they’ll likely prefer it that way.
Dogs that enjoy swimming should always be supervised. Even confident swimmers can tire quickly. If your dog is new to swimming, ease them in gradually and consider using a well-fitted pet life jacket for extra safety. Never let your pet drink from pools, lakes, or the ocean. Chlorine, salt, and bacteria can upset their stomach or even cause illness.
2. Fireworks and Anxious Pets
Fireworks may be a fun summer tradition, but they’re a common source of anxiety for pets. Cats often retreat to quiet corners or show changes in behavior. Many run away and find a place to hide when they hear fireworks. It can be difficult to calm them. Once found, ease them out with a toy or treat and make the space as comfortable as possible. Patience is key!
Dogs often show signs of stress such as barking, pacing, shaking, or hiding. Staying nearby and offering comfort can go a long way. Try soothing music, background noise from a fan, or a quiet, cozy indoor space. For pets with severe anxiety, talk to us about calming supplements or prescription medications that may help.
3. Signs of Heat Exhaustion
Both dogs and cats are at risk of heat exhaustion during hot summer days. Watch dogs for signs like heavy panting, drooling, vomiting, or weakness. Cats may become lethargic, hide more than usual, or show labored breathing. If you have an outdoor cat, be sure to keep a close eye on them and ensure they get regular breaks from the heat.
Start walking your dogs in the early morning or evening to avoid heat exhaustion. Most importantly, never leave pets in a parked car for any amount of time. Always make sure all pets have access to shade, fresh water, and cool areas of the house.
4. Hot Pavement Protection
Hot pavement can burn the paw pads of both dogs and cats. Dogs often encounter this during walks or while roaming the backyard. Outdoor cats may unknowingly step onto hot driveways or sidewalks.
A good rule of thumb is to place your hand on the pavement to test it. If you cannot hold your hand to the pavement for five seconds, it’s too hot for their paws. Guide your pet to shaded and grassy areas where you know they will be most comfortable and avoid peak heat hours. For extra protection, consider purchasing booties for dogs and walk them on shaded paths.
5. Watch the BBQ Scraps
Summer cookouts can be risky for pets. Dogs will beg, and cats are known to sneak snacks without you noticing. Many barbecue foods like onions, garlic, cooked bones, corn cobs, chocolate, and alcohol are toxic to both cats and dogs. Supervise pets closely during gatherings, remind guests not to feed them table food, and secure trash immediately to avoid accidental ingestion.
